Your Body is Talking, Are You Listening?
Our bodies are amazing and unique machines.
If you think about the intricacies of how each cell, neuron, muscle, organ, vein, etc.. all work together to keep us up and running each day, you can’t help but be awestruck. One thing that is so often overlooked is the fact that our bodies were created to heal themselves. Those aches, pains, moods are like the little knock on the door or the voice saying, “Hello? Excuse me? Can I get your attention, please?”
Let’s take a look at the S.O.S. messages our bodies send out on a physical and energetic level.
A great example of a physical message is dehydration. Living here in the desert, weather is wonderful, balmy, and very deceptive on how it affects the body. Water is the one thing that we must have in order to survive. Even without the 100+ degree temperatures, you need to make sure to keep hydrated. When I don’t drink enough water, I feel very tired or may get headaches or feel a little blah. It took me a little bit to understand this, even though people everywhere kept saying,”drink plenty of water.” Now that I’ve acknowledged this is what’s happening, its much easier to prepare and be proactive. I keep a full water bottle on my nightstand and drink water if I wake up in the middle of the night, drink at least two 8 ounce glasses of water first thing in the morning, and keep a water bottle with me all day and keep refilling as needed. I’ve even started to bring a full water bottle with me in the car to keep hydrated while out and about.
Another example is when my adrenal system is in need of a boost after doing a clearing session with a client, or if I feel ungrounded and sluggish. I crave beef big time and nothing else helps bring my body back to balance faster than a nice piece of steak accompanied by root vegetables.
Ever get those leg cramps in your calf or have your muscles seize after a long run or doing hours or yard work? Did you drink enough water? Did you stop to take a break and eat something? How’s your magnesium levels? My niece and I did a half marathon 4 years ago and I noticed that along with water, some of the refreshment stops along the way were handing out pretzels and little packets of salt. I had no idea that the salt helps to eliminate and/or relieve muscle cramping. Its been a very useful tip and when I have done long hikes or walks and feel my muscles tensing up, I eat a quarter sized amount of salt (organic sea salt is best). It works immediately to help calm any cramping.
How about examples of how stress manifests in our body on an energetic level?
Have you ever had a sore throat or dry mouth that came on without notice? The initial reaction may be you’re coming down with a cold or allergies acting up. Next time it happens to you, take a minute to step back and look at what’s going on in your life. Is there something that you need to say or express to someone but you’re holding back or biting your tongue? When we deny our inner, authentic voice, its needs do something to get your attention and since our voice is an integral piece in communication and expression, its an obvious attack point for fearful energy.
How about knee pain that flares up for no apparent reason? Knees are necessary in order to keep walking and moving forward. If you have fear of leaving your comfort zone and making big, positive changes in your life, the dysfunctional energy that has kept you inside the box is going to do what it needs to keep you where you are. What better way to do that then stop you in your tracks or derail you then inhibit your ability to walk?
Do you feel between family and work responsibilities you have the weight of the world on your shoulders? This stress shows up in upper back, shoulder, and/or neck pain. When you recognize this, its easier to make changes or delegate to relieve the pressure and stress on you.
Now, I’m not a medical doctor but I do have a lot of experience in listening to my body and allowing it to guide me to what it needs. I’m also an advocate of doing what resonates with you the most and if you feel medical attention is warranted, then by all means go with that option. Prescriptions only help alleviate symptoms, they don’t know who you are or what your body actually needs and I do urge you to be informed and ask questions about any medications in terms of what they’re really being prescribed for, how they may interact with any other medication you’re currently taking, and especially the side effects.
This information is to get you thinking about your health, where you’re at, where you’d like to be, how you’re going to get there, and just knowing that you have options.
Your body has been talking, now its time to really listen. Be your own best health advocate and let’s get the conversation started!
